William Jackson III is a name that you should go ahead and familiarize yourself with. He is one of the lesser know cornerbacks due to playing for the Houston Cougars. He is a guy that could very well sneak into the bottom of the first round but for Cowboys fans, he is a guy that the team hopes falls to 34.
Jackson has big play ability from the corner position. At times he can get called for being too grabby when running with the receiver but mostly he provides good play. During his season he had five picks, including two against the Florida State Seminoles. He reads the receiver well and shows good mirror skills. He attacks the ball in the air with a “it’s my ball” mentality.
He plays both press and off coverage well. Jackson will jam receivers at the line as to not allow them to get a free release. Won’t get caught peeking into the backfield due to the fact he keeps his eyes on the receiver. Jackson is a player that you won’t see take plays off. He will come up to hit ball carriers. He crashes down on slants hard. Expect a few calls for getting too early. Jackson is very aggressive.
As we saw a few times, Jackson has the ability to go get the ball at the catch point. He will undercut the route to make a play. Technique as a tackler will need some improvement such as squaring up and wrapping up. He shows good speed on tape but lacks that second gear although you didn’t see him get beat deep very often. Jackson has the length and size the Cowboys covet at the position.
It will be a waiting game when the Cowboys come to make their second pick. If he can slip by the teams in the later part of the first round, William Jackson III could very well be on his way to the metroplex.
